Affordable EV Option? Polytron G3 Launched in Indonesia

The burgeoning electric vehicle (EV) market in Indonesia has a new contender vying for the attention of budget-conscious consumers: the Polytron G3. This domestically assembled electric SUV marks a significant step for Indonesia’s automotive industry, presenting a potentially more accessible entry point into EV ownership.

Launched with a unique “Battery-as-a-Service” (BaaS) option, the Polytron G3 aims to tackle the high upfront cost often associated with EVs. Under this scheme, buyers can purchase the car without the battery at a significantly reduced price, opting instead for a monthly battery subscription. This innovative approach could make electric mobility a reality for a wider range of Indonesian drivers.

The Polytron G3 offers a claimed driving range of up to 402 kilometers on a single charge, powered by a Lithium Ferro Phosphate (LFP) battery. It features a front-mounted electric motor producing 150 kW of power and 320 Nm of torque. In terms of features, the G3 boasts a modern infotainment system with a 12.8-inch touchscreen, smartphone connectivity, and various safety features including ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) on the higher-spec G3+ variant.

While the BaaS model lowers the initial purchase price considerably, the long-term cost will depend on the user’s mileage and the monthly subscription fees. Polytron also offers a conventional purchase option with the battery included, catering to different consumer preferences.

The arrival of the Polytron G3 signifies a positive development for Indonesia’s EV ecosystem, potentially accelerating the adoption of cleaner transportation by offering a more affordable pathway to electric vehicle ownership. Its success will depend on consumer acceptance of the BaaS model and its overall value proposition in the competitive Indonesian automotive market.

With prices starting at around IDR 299 million for the BaaS model, the Polytron G3 undercuts many of its EV competitors, making it a potentially attractive option for a wider segment of the Indonesian car-buying public eager to embrace electric mobility without breaking the bank.
